Jordan's Off-the-Beaten-Path Roman Gem
Explore the ancient Decapolis city of Abila, nestled between the twin hills of Tell Abila and Tell Umm al-Amad near Irbid. Though less excavated than other Roman sites, Abila offers a raw, adventurous glimpse into Jordan’s rich past—perfect for travelers seeking authenticity beyond typical tourist trails.
Abila flourished as a Hellenistic and Roman-Byzantine hub from the 2nd century BC until a devastating earthquake in AD 747 left it in ruins. Today, it reveals layers of temples, tombs, and theaters waiting to be discovered.
– Rock-Cut Tomb Caves: adorned with spectacularly preserved frescoes.
– Roman-Byzantine Theater: partially buried but evocative.
– Scattered Colonnades: from ancient markets, baths, and temples.
– Unexcavated Mysteries: across a sprawling 40-hectare site.
– Duration: Allow 1–2 hours to fully explore both hills and tombs.
– Best Time to Visit: Spring (March–May) or Autumn (September–November) for mild weather and clear paths.
– Tip: Bring a flashlight for tomb exploration and wear sturdy shoes. Local guides in Quwayliba village can enrich your experience with untold stories.
Abila is 15km north of Irbid. Take a bus from Irbid’s North Bus Station to Quwayliba (under 1 JD, 25 minutes) and ask to be dropped at the ruins.
