The Great Moabite Capital of Southern Jordan
Explore the historic heart of ancient Moab, where kingdoms once thrived along the Kings' Highway.
Situated in the fertile highlands of the Kerak Governorate, Al-Rabbah stands as one of Jordan’s most significant—yet often overlooked—archaeological treasures. Known in antiquity as one of the greatest cities of the Moabite kingdom, this ancient urban center served as a political, economic, and cultural hub. Its strategic location along the historic Kings’ Highway offered commanding views over Wadi Mujib, the Dead Sea, and the highlands toward Jerusalem.
Al-Rabbah (also referred to historically as Rabbath Moab) was a major Moabite settlement during the Iron Age. It played a vital role in the regional network of trade and diplomacy, linking northern and southern Jordan and connecting inland routes to the Dead Sea. Artifacts and structural remains indicate continued habitation through Nabatean, Roman, and Byzantine periods.
